Judging a used basketball shoe
Three things carry a basketball shoe: the ankle collar, the traction pattern and the midsole. Collar padding compresses with use, and a collapsed collar no longer supports the ankle in a landing, which is the whole reason for a high top.
Traction is easy to read in photographs. The herringbone pattern under the forefoot is what grips on a pivot, and once those ridges are polished flat the shoe slides on a clean court. Repeated jumping also compresses the heel unit faster than running does, so a pair used indoors for a season can look pristine and feel dead.

- Very Good — 70–79%, 6 pairs
- Premium — 90–100%, 4 pairs
- Good — 60–69%, 2 pairs
