How to Check if New Balance Shoes Are Original
Almost everything hangs on one letter. The N on the side panel is large, central and stitched rather than printed, which makes it the most demanding part of the shoe to reproduce — and the first place a counterfeit falls down.
Read the N
Proportion, stitching and where it sits
Three things to look at, in order.
Proportion. The diagonal of the N should be a consistent thickness and meet the two uprights at clean angles. Counterfeits commonly make the diagonal too thick, which closes up the triangular spaces on either side and makes the letter look heavy.
Stitching. The N is stitched around its full outline. On genuine pairs that stitch line is dense, even, and follows the letter's edge at a constant distance. Loose threads, visible gaps or stitching that wanders away from the edge are strong signals.
Position. The N should sit at the same height and angle on both shoes, and its base should sit parallel to the midsole rather than tilting. Put the two shoes side by side; asymmetry between them is the easiest fault to see.
The Made in USA or UK question
A claim you can check against the model
New Balance genuinely manufactures a limited range in the United States and in Flimby, England, and those lines are premium and priced accordingly. Everything else is made in Asia, which is entirely normal and says nothing about authenticity.
What is worth checking is whether the claim matches the model. A shoe stamped Made in USA that belongs to a mainstream Asian-manufactured line is a serious warning. Look up the specific model number and see where that line is actually produced. Note also that New Balance uses the phrasing carefully on genuine products, so wording that reads as slightly off is itself worth pausing over.
Materials and midsole
Suede and mesh quality
Many New Balance models use suede panels. Genuine suede has a short, even nap that changes shade when brushed in different directions. Counterfeits frequently substitute a coated synthetic that looks flat, feels slick, and does not shift shade when you run a finger across it. On a used pair this is easier to judge than on a new one, because wear brings the difference out.
Fresh Foam and FuelCell
On models using these midsoles, the foam should have a clearly moulded, geometric surface rather than a smooth blank slab, and it should compress and rebound rather than feeling dead. The moulded pattern is part of the engineering and counterfeits tend to simplify it.
One thing that is not a signal
A yellowed or greyed midsole on a white New Balance. These oxidise with age and light, and it happens to genuine pairs sitting unworn. It affects appearance only.
