How to Check if Puma Shoes Are Original
Puma is copied less often than Nike or Adidas, which means the fakes that do exist tend to be cruder. That is good news for a buyer: the tells are usually visible rather than subtle, and they cluster around one feature.
The Formstrip
The curve is the signature, and it is hard to copy
The Formstrip is the swooping band running along the side of the shoe from the sole up toward the laces. On a genuine pair it is a smooth continuous curve that thickens gradually through the middle and tapers cleanly at both ends. It sits at a consistent height above the midsole along its whole run.
Counterfeits get the general shape but miss the transitions. Look for a strip that changes width abruptly rather than gradually, ends that stop bluntly instead of tapering, or a curve that flattens in the middle. Where the Formstrip is stitched rather than moulded, the stitch line should follow the edge at an even distance the whole way.
As always, compare left against right. They should mirror each other exactly.
Branding placement
The cat, and where it sits
Where the leaping cat appears — usually the heel or the tongue — check its proportions against Puma's own product images for that model. The animal should be lean and the legs clearly separated. Counterfeit versions frequently thicken the body or blur the gap between the legs, especially when the logo is embroidered rather than printed.
The wordmark
PUMA is set in a specific face with distinctive letter spacing. On genuine shoes the letters are evenly weighted and the spacing is consistent. On fakes the M is often the giveaway, sitting slightly wider or narrower than it should relative to the other letters.
Inside the shoe
Sockliner and tongue label
Lift the insole. Genuine Puma sockliners carry clean branding and, on most models, moulding that fits the footbed exactly with no gaps at the edges. The label under the tongue should be sharply printed with consistent character spacing and an article number that returns this model when searched.
On a worn pair the insole print will have faded from the heel and forefoot where the foot sits. That is normal. Judge the printing that has been protected under the arch instead.
A note on Puma specifically
Puma's catalogue spans a wide price range, from budget lines to collaborations. A low price on a mainstream Puma model is much less suspicious than the same price on a limited release, because the mainstream lines genuinely retail cheaply. Judge the price against the specific model, not against the brand.
