How much life is left in a used running shoe?
The part that wears out first on a running shoe is invisible. Midsole foam compresses with every kilometre and stops returning energy long before the upper looks tired, which is why a pair can look almost new and still be finished for running. Most midsoles are considered spent somewhere between 500 and 800 kilometres.
Read the outsole instead of the upper. Wear at the outer heel and under the forefoot is where a runner lands and pushes off, so deep smoothing in those two places means real mileage. Even wear across a shallow tread usually means light use. A pair past its running life is still perfectly good for walking or the gym, and is priced accordingly.

Four grades, no overlap between the bands:
- Excellent — 80–89%, 456 pairs
- Very Good — 70–79%, 180 pairs
- Premium — 90–100%, 60 pairs
- Good — 60–69%, 24 pairs

Which size to run in
Choice is widest at EU 40, EU 39, EU 41. Feet swell over distance, which is why runners often buy half a size above their everyday number; settle your baseline with the conversion chart first, then check how your brand runs, because a Nike EU 42 and an Adidas EU 42 are not the same shoe.
