Buying second-hand cycling shoes
Cycling shoes barely touch the ground, so they age far more slowly than any other athletic shoe and used pairs are unusually good value. The sole is a stiff plate rather than a cushioned midsole, and stiffness does not degrade the way foam does.
What to check is the cleat mounting area underneath: the threaded inserts must be clean and undamaged, because a stripped insert is not repairable. Also check the closure — dials and ratchets are the usual failure point, and replacement parts are hard to source locally.
