Our Condition Grading Standard
Every pair we sell carries one of four grades, and the bands do not overlap, so a shoe sits in exactly one. The grade is a percentage of the shoe's original condition. This page sets out what each band means, what it costs, and — the part worth knowing before you shop — where the price actually drops.
The four grades

Where the price actually drops
Stepping down one grade is not a steady discount. Almost the entire saving sits in one place.
- Premium to Excellent — about 10% cheaper
- Excellent to Very Good — about 40% cheaper
- Very Good to Good — about 17% cheaper
So paying up from Excellent to Premium costs relatively little for a visible step in condition. But dropping from Excellent to Very Good takes roughly two fifths off the price for one band of extra cosmetic wear, on a shoe that still has full structural integrity and working cushioning.
If you are buying on budget, that is the step to make. It is the best value on the site, and it is why Very Good is worth looking at before Good — the next step down only saves another 17%.
What each grade means
GRADE A+ · 90–100% OF ORIGINAL CONDITION
Premium
Closest to new. Worn only a few times. No heel drag, logos sharp, no colour fading, and the midsole has taken almost no compression. For anyone who wants near-new condition without the new price. The smallest band we hold at 14% of stock, because shoes in this state are simply rarer.
GRADE A · 80–89% OF ORIGINAL CONDITION
Excellent
Light wear on the outsole that does not affect how the shoe performs. Cushioning is intact and the upper shows only minimal creasing. This is two thirds of everything we stock and the grade most choices will come from. Suited to daily wear.
GRADE B+ · 70–79% OF ORIGINAL CONDITION
Very Good
Wear is visible — creasing across the toe, smoothing on the outsole, some marking on the upper — but the shoe keeps full structural integrity and working cushioning. Good for the gym, for hiking, or as a second pair. As the table above shows, it is also where the money is.
GRADE B · 60–69% OF ORIGINAL CONDITION
Good
Our lowest grade and lowest price. Wear is clear across both the upper and the outsole, but the shoe is structurally sound and fully wearable. We list very few of these — 3% of stock — because we do not take on pairs below this standard at all.
How to choose a grade
- Buying for appearance — something you will be seen in, or a gift. Go Premium, and note it costs only around 10% more than Excellent.
- Buying for daily use — Excellent, which is also where the widest choice is by a long way.
- Buying on budget, or for the gym — Very Good. The 40% saving is the largest single step on the scale.
- Price is the only thing that matters — Good, but check the stock first: with 62 pairs listed, your size may not be in it.
What the grade does not tell you
It is not a statement about authenticity. Every pair we list is checked as genuine regardless of grade. A Good-grade shoe is as original as a Premium one — it has simply been worn more. How authenticity is checked is covered in our guide to checking whether branded shoes are original.
It does not tell you how much use is left. A grade describes overall condition, not remaining life, and those differ by type of shoe. A running shoe's midsole can be finished while the upper still looks excellent — explained on our running shoes page.
It is not a substitute for the photographs. The grade is a summary of what the pictures already show. Every listing is photographed individually, so the wear on the exact pair you are buying is visible before you order.
How grading works here
Each pair is inspected and graded individually before it is listed, because each pair is a single physical shoe rather than one of a run. The same shoe in the same model can sit in two different grades depending on how its previous owner treated it, which is why the grade is attached to the listing and not to the model.
The bands are fixed and do not overlap, so there is no ambiguity about which one a shoe falls into. If you receive a pair that does not match the grade it was sold under, our returns policy gives you 7 days.
