How to Clean Pre-Loved Sneakers
Clean by material, not by habit. The same method that brings a knit upper back will ruin suede, and the mistake is usually irreversible. Work out what the shoe is made of first; everything else follows from that.
Before anything else
Take the laces out and lift the insole. Both trap far more dirt than the upper does, both wash separately, and leaving them in means cleaning around them badly. Knock the soles together outside to shed loose grit — in Pakistani conditions that alone removes a surprising amount.
By material
Knit and mesh
The most forgiving. A soft brush, cool water and a little mild detergent, worked gently in small circles. Rinse the cloth rather than the shoe, so you are lifting dirt out rather than pushing it deeper into the weave. Blot dry with a towel.
Leather
Wipe with a damp cloth, then a barely soapy one, then a clean damp one. Dry immediately — leather does not like sitting wet. Once fully dry, a conditioner puts back what the cleaning took out, and this is what makes second-hand leather look cared for rather than merely clean.
Suede and nubuck
Keep water away. Use a suede brush on a dry shoe, always in one direction, and a suede eraser for marks. Water leaves a permanent tide line on suede, which is the single most common way people ruin a pair they were trying to rescue.
Midsoles and outsoles
These take the firmest treatment. A stiffer brush and a paste of bicarbonate of soda lifts scuffing off white midsoles well. Yellowing is oxidation rather than dirt, so no amount of scrubbing shifts it.
Four things that ruin shoes
- The washing machine. It separates glued soles and collapses the internal structure. The shoe may survive one cycle; it rarely survives several.
- Hot water. Softens the adhesives holding the shoe together.
- Drying in direct sun. Cracks leather, warps midsoles, fades colour. Air dry in shade with paper stuffed inside to hold the shape.
- Bleach on white shoes. It yellows what it is meant to whiten, and the effect worsens over time.
