Storing Shoes in Pakistan's Humidity
Humidity damages stored shoes in two separate ways, and only one of them is visible. Mould on the upper you can see and clean. The midsole quietly breaking down you cannot, until the day the sole crumbles as you put the shoe on.
The two problems
Mould and mildew
Damp plus warmth plus no airflow. It appears first inside the shoe and along the tongue where sweat collected, which is why storing a pair unworn but uncleaned is worse than storing a clean pair that was worn more.
Midsole breakdown
Polyurethane midsoles absorb moisture over years and lose their structure, so the foam turns brittle and crumbles under load. It happens to shoes sitting in a box, untouched, and it is why an unworn pair from ten years ago can fall apart on its first outing. EVA foam, which most modern running shoes use, resists this far better — but neither material enjoys a humid cupboard.
How to store them
- Dry and clean before storing. Any moisture left inside becomes mould in a sealed box. This is the step people skip.
- Airflow beats sealing. A sealed plastic box traps humidity against the shoe. A shelf, an open rack or a box with the lid off is better in a humid climate.
- Silica gel packets — the ones that come with electronics — inside each shoe. Replace them every few months.
- Off the floor. Floors are the dampest surface in the room, especially in monsoon.
- Out of sunlight. Sun fades and cracks; a dark, ventilated space is what you want.
- Paper inside to hold shape and pull moisture. Change it if it feels damp.
During monsoon
Check stored pairs monthly rather than leaving them until the season ends. Mould caught in its first week wipes off; mould left three months stains the material permanently. If a shoe comes home soaked, dry it slowly at room temperature with paper inside — never on a heater or in direct sun, both of which warp the midsole while drying the upper.
Rotate what you wear
Wearing the same pair daily in humid weather means it never fully dries out between wears. Two pairs alternated will each last more than twice as long as one pair worn continuously, which is an argument for a cheap second pair rather than a single expensive one.
