Read the outsole, not the upper
Running shoes are the one category where condition and remaining life are different questions. The midsole compresses with mileage and stops returning energy long before the upper looks tired, so a pair can grade Excellent on appearance and still be finished for running. Wear at the outer heel and under the forefoot is the honest signal. A pair past its running life is still perfectly good for walking or the gym, and is priced accordingly.
